This is a kind of primitive animal related to corals. Mackmurdo often based his patterns on real but unfamiliar and strange-looking natural forms. As a young man he was strongly influenced by the drawings of the artist Burne-Jones and his swirling designs for stained glass. Mackmurdo developed his eccentric style with the help of his friend and fellow designer Selwyn Image. Later designers in the Art Nouveau style often imitated his favourite quirks.","physicalDescription":"Design, for a wallpaper or textile, of formalized leaves; lettered within the design with the monogram of the Century Guild <i>CG</i>; Charcoal, watercolour and body colour, on paper.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mackmurdo, Arthur Heygate","id":"A8639"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"charcoal","id":"AAT12862"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"body colour","id":"x32506"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"AAT54196"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Charcoal, watercolour and body colour, on paper","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Wall coverings","id":"THES48878"}],"styles":[{"text":"Victorian","id":"x29321"},{"text":"Art Nouveau","id":"x29285"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM2661","2021MW4694"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"DR","shelf":"150","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"wallpaper or textile design","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1882","earliest":"1877-01-01","latest":"1886-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"54","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"75.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions from: Oman, Charles C., and Hamilton, Jean. <u>Wallpapers: a history and illustrated catalogue of the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum</u>.
