His own designs had, in addition, a subtle style that made them modern. In this design for a writing desk Voysey refers to the past by using oak. The colour and grain of this traditional wood are emphasised by the rich colour of the burnished copper hinges. He has extended the copper mounts to make them into a new kind of decoration, using his superb drawing skills to produce pictures in silhouette. Voysey designed this kind of furniture specifically for the houses he designed.
