The similarity of the armour to certain Catalan works implies it may be from Catalonia. \nThe archangel Michael is the first of the angels. He is often represented in armour with a sword and standing over or fighting with a dragon or he is shown with scales. God sent him to overcome Lucifer and he is also regarded as the angel of the Resurrection. He would receive the souls of the dead weighing them in his balance.","physicalDescription":"Figure of St Michael the Archangel trampling on the Devil. In his right hand is bent and upraised. A lance surmounted by a cross is fixed to his right wrist by means of a wire bangle. His right foot tramples the dragon-type devil (with wrinkeled breasts), which in turn grasps the base of the staff with his right forefoot and St Michael's shield with his left. Its hind leg clings to St. Michael's robe. The saint stares straight ahead. He wears elaborate armour and a fillet around his ehad with a decorative stud in its centre. On silver-gilt base.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"boxwood","id":"AAT12002"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Boxwood, silver-gilt","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2026PM5611"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES395107"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Spain","id":"x29170"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly Catalonia"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1490- 1500","earliest":"1490-01-01","latest":"1500-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"12.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought from J.C Robinson in 1879.
