Liam Flynn is arguably the most prominent active Irish turner.  His work is part of the classic tradition of turning that favours simple forms derived ultimately from Modernist sculpture, and a desire to exploit the inherent characteristics of wood. The consistently thin wall demonstrates the turner's control of his process. The ebonized (blackened) surface and carved pattern help to give more definition to the contours produced by the lathe turning, while not obliterating the material presence of the oak from which it is made.","physicalDescription":"Turned and carved ebonised oak vessel","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Flynn, Liam","id":"AUTH345728"},"association":{"text":"turners (woodworkers)","id":"AAT25381"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oak","id":"AAT12264"}],"techniques":[{"text":"turning","id":"AAT53158"},{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"ebonising","id":"x36341"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Turned and carved ebonised oak","categories":[{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2009BX8547"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES302222"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Inner Rimmed Vessel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Ireland (country)","id":"x32424"},"association":{"text":"turning","id":"AAT53158"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2006","earliest":"2006-01-01","latest":"2006-12-31"},"association":{"text":"turning","id":"AAT53158"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by The Grace Barrand Design Centre","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"34","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"20","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions supplied by maker","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'06ER#18'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscription on base"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Ebonised and carved turned oak vessel, made by Liam Flynn, Ireland, 2006","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"New Masters of Woodturning (Fox Chapel publishing)\r\n\r\nAdamson, Glenn, ‘Filling a Gap: Recent acquisitions of turned wood at the V&A’, V&A Online Journal, No.2, Autumn 2009:\nhttp://web.archive.org/web/20230112105123/http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/journals/research-journal/issue-02/filling-a-gap-recent-acquisitions-of-turned-wood-at-the-v-and-a/"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Unique","id":"THES48864"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["W.32-2008"],"accessionNumberNum":"32","accessionNumberPrefix":"W","accessionYear":2008,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2008-07-08","availableToBook":true}}
