From the late seventeenth century onwards, men wore a ‘stock’ or wide band of linen around their necks, over their shirt collars.  The whiteness and finess of these linen stocks demonstrated a man’s wealth and social status; the depth and volume of fabric in a stock signified how fashionable it was.  \r\nThe nineteenth century saw the transition from the eighteenth-century linen stock to a black silk version to a colourful cravat and then to the modern tie. The traditional stock remained an essential part of evening and court dress until the 1850s.  Most fashion illustrations focus on daywear but a few portray more formal attire with the linen stock.\r\nThis example is made of lawn, a particularly finely woven linen with very fine cartridge pleating.  To minimise bulk, the selvedges of the linen are used on each side of the central panel, which measures about 113 cm in width.
