The Virgin is seen behind a ledge, facing to the right with the child lying in her arms. Jesus is shown with a scroll below Him and his right hand raised in blessing. On the ledge at the sides there are two flaming candelabrum and another appears to the left of the Virgin's neck. A foliated swag hangs between the candelabrum. In the cloud filled background, two cherub heads appear. \r\n\r\nThis composition is recorded in seven marble variants which perhaps derive from a lost original by Donatello executed in Siena in 1457-8. Two of the reliefs, in the Louvre and the Chigi-Saraceni collection in Siena, bear the arms of the Piccolomini family, and are generally assumed to have been carved in Siena. The artist responsible for these carvings and for the present relief is related to and perhaps identical with the Sienese sculptor Giovanni di Stefano (b.1446; d. 1506).
