This is a typical armour of Rajasthan, probably worn only by royalty or senior military commanders. It was presented to the Indian Museum by H.H. the Maharaja of Holkar in 1850 and transferred to the South Kensington Museum in 1879. The coat probably dates to the late 18th century.","physicalDescription":"Steel, brass and copper butted links arranged in a zig-zag pattern; the purple velvet collar studded with gilt headed nails.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"steel","id":"AAT133751"},{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"},{"text":"copper","id":"AAT11020"},{"text":"velvet","id":"AAT133711"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Steel, brass and copper links, velvet collar with gilt headed nails.","categories":[{"text":"Arms & Armour","id":"THES48992"},{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2012FP1604","2012FP1606","2012FP1628","2012FP1605"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES394837"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Body armour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Gwalior","id":"x30315"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 18th century","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Transferred from the India Museum in 1879","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"84","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"30","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Presented by HH the Maharaja of Holkar in 1850 to the Indian Museum","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Mail coat composed of steel, brass and copper links; the velvet collar studded with gilt headed nails; Possibly Gwalior, late 18th century.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Lord Egerton of Tatton, Indian and Oriental Armour, London, 1896, p. 120, Cat.
