They were a traditional form from south Germany and were often presented as wedding gifts. \r\n\r\nThis object would once have been part of the buffet. The buffet of plate was an important feature of medieval and Renaissance banquets. Often made of oak or walnut, buffets usually stood at the side of a dining room, their shelves filled with tablewares. Gold and silver vessels were displayed to convey a sense of the owner's wealth. Normally these vessels were used for the service of food and drink, but on great state occasions they would be set out purely for display.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Both cups are of identical form, fitting together at the lip, each stands on an eight-lobed foot, with a tapering stem and gourd-shaped bowl, the stem is chased with swirling attenuated lobes, the bowl is also embossed with swirling lobes and has applied openwork flowers and foliage and a corded band beneath the vertical lip.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beutmüller, Hans","id":"A10810"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver-gilt","id":"x37998"}],"techniques":[{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"die stamping","id":"AAT53224"},{"text":"embossing","id":"AAT53826"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"etching","id":"x39131"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Raised, cast, stamped, embossed, chased, etched and silver-gilt","categories":[{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Games","id":"THES48947"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009CA2560","2009CA2668","2009CA2563","2009CA2562","2009CA2561","2009CA2559","2009CA2558","2009CA2557","2009CA2556","2024NW8695","2024NW8694"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"72A","id":"THES413998"},"free":"","case":"CA008","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"72A","id":"THES413998"},"free":"","case":"CA008","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"cup","id":""}],[{"text":"cup","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Nuremberg","id":"x29057"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1603-1609","earliest":"1603-01-01","latest":"1609-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"45.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"both stacked together","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"14.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"1500","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"24.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"one cup","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 25/04/24 IW ","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Nuremberg hallmark (BZ 12, <i>Nürnberger Goldschmiedekunst</i>, 2007)","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Marked on foot and lip of each"},{"content":"Mark of Hanns Beutmuller (MZ0063a, <i>Nürnberger Goldschmiedekunst</i>, 2007)","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Marked on foot and lip of each"}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: The Earls Spencer, Althorp, Northamptonshire.
