The stage show ran at the Victoria Palace Theatre, London, from 1962 until 1972, before touring British seaside towns.\n\r\n‘Blackface minstrelsy’ originated in the United States around 1830 and perpetuated racist negative stereotypes of Black people. White performers used black make-up to blacken their skin. Blackface minstrelsy bolstered racist attitudes in both the United States and Britain.\n\r\nIn 1967, the Campaign Against Racial Discrimination petitioned the BBC to cancel the show.
