Bacchanalian figures, including satyrs, maenads, putti and animals are carved on both pieces.\nIn the centre of the basin is a scene of Hercules and the Nemean Lion, perhaps loosely based on the work of Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi, known as Antico (ca. 1460-1528).\r\nThe style of the mounts suggests they were manufactured by the goldsmiths J.D. Schleissner and sons. This was a goldsmiths' company founded in Hanau in ca. 1817. The founder, Johann Christian Daniel Schleissner (1793-1862), came from a family of Augsburg goldsmiths. His son, Daniel Philipp August (1825-1892), specialised in silver objects in a historicising style, exhibiting at many international exhibitions in the 1870s. He sometimes used earlier goldsmiths' stamps to mark his creations, although these were considered 'fantasy pieces', 'Phantasieartikels', not necessarily intended to deceive (Thiele, 1992). \r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Silver and ivory basin carved with bacchanalian figures, including satyrs, maenads, putti and animals. \nAround the edge of the basis are scenes of putti frolicking indebted to the work of François Du Quesnoy, on of which is closely similar to a relief by Du Quesnoy of putti playing around a wine barrel (mus. no. 1063-1853). Vines and grapes are depicted in the silver mounts, as well as trophies of musical instruments. The central boss is chased with a scene of Hercules and the Nemean lion.\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Schleissner, J.D.","id":"AUTH315908"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved ivory with chased silver","categories":[{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009BX1150","2009BX1166","2009BX1161"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342948"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES402532"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"021","id":"THES410190"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"basin","id":""}],[{"text":"fragment","id":""}],[{"text":"fragment","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Hanau","id":"x35689"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1880","earliest":"1875-01-01","latest":"1884-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"LOAN:GILBERT.997:1-2008","id":"O250817"},"association":"Ensemble"}],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of basin","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"62","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of basin","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Provenance: The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Museum; previoulsy purchased by them through S.J.
