This cup’s ivory body and cover are carved with maritime themes, including sea monsters. But these motifs are not continued in the disproportionately thin silver stem, which is cast with slender vines alluding to wine.\r\n\nAnalysis by the V&A’s Science department has shown that the stem and the bowl have different chemical compositions from the other silver elements on the cup, a sign that they were made by different workshops. The cup was probably originally supported by an ivory stem with the same maritime theme as the body, which was later replaced with this newer one. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Silver-gilt and elephant ivory cup and cover. The cup stands on a domed, oval base with a shaped border, embossed in the centre with grotesque winged auricular masks. The stem is formed as a tree trunk with vines around it. The lower part of the bowl is chased with vines; the ivory barrel above is carved with a frieze of nymphs, dolphins and putti. The cover is an ivory dome carved with sea monsters and surmounted by a conch-blowing putto on a dolphin, the ivory is mounted with a silver-gilt border flat-chased with scrolling foliage.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Erhart, Hans Jacob","id":"A22374"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"silver-gilt","id":"x37998"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"},{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"embossing","id":"AAT53826"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"flat chasing","id":"AAT233402"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved elephant ivory with raised, cast, embossed, chased and flat-chased gilded silver (silver-gilt)","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009BX1151","2009BX1156","2009BX1153","2009BX1152","2009BX1149","2009BX1148","2009BX1147","2009BX1128"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"71A","id":"THES413997"},"free":"","case":"CA004","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"71A","id":"THES413997"},"free":"","case":"CA004","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"cup","id":""}],[{"text":"cover","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1650","earliest":"1645-01-01","latest":"1654-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Ivory body"},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1820-40","earliest":"1815-01-01","latest":"1840-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"Stem and bowl"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"40.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"16.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"1340","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"cup and cover","note":"Combined weight of cup and cover"}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 19/02/24 IW","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Purchased from J.
