His image often appeared at the entrance to Russian homes to welcome guests. \r\n\r\nThe term 'micromosaic' is used to describe mosaics made of the smallest glass pieces. Some micromosaics contain more than 5000 pieces per square inch. The earliest attempts at micromosaic revealed visible joins between the pieces (known as tesserae) and a lack of perspective. Later artists such as Antonio Aguatti made huge advances in micromosaic technique, resulting in renderings that were truer to life. Glass micromosaic technique developed in the 18th century, in the Vatican Mosaic Workshop in Rome, where they still undertake restoration work today. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Three quarter length frontal picture of Saint Nicholas as an old man with grey hair wearing a red <i>sakkos</i> with a white <i>omophorion</i> over it. His right hand is held up with three fingers raised in blessing and in his left hand he holds a book and a white cloth. A halo encircles his head and the background is a radiating penumbra in shades of blue. The mosaic is in a silver-gilt frame.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mosaic glass","id":"AAT260731"},{"text":"silver-gilt","id":"x37998"}],"techniques":[{"text":"micromosaic","id":"x42499"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Micromosaic and silver-gilt","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Plaques & Plaquettes","id":"THES49031"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BW3947","2008BW3948","2008BW3946","2008BW3945"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"72","id":"THES49722"},"free":"","case":"CA002","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"030","id":"THES404908"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"picture","id":""}],[{"text":"frame","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Russia","id":"x29110"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Moscow","id":"x32457"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"},{"place":{"text":"St Petersburg","id":"x29178"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1858","earliest":"1858-01-01","latest":"1858-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"18.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"14","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 29/01/24 IW","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"The silver gilt frame has the city mark of Moscow or St Petersburg, the Imperial Warrant mark of the goldsmith's firm of Sazikov and the date mark for 1858","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: A.R.
