A bureau plat like this would originally be made of marquetry or ebonised wood, here the use of <i>pietre dure</i> gives a distinctly Italian flavour to a typically French form. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Rectangular writing table composed of ebonised wood with gilt bronze mounts. Each leg is surmounted by a gilt bronze female bust, the sides and front of the desk inlaid with panels of pietre dure depicting flowers and fruit. The front of the desk has two gilt bronze mounts in the form of bearded heads. The table top is of black marble with <i>pietre dure</i> depictions of flowers and fruit within a rectangular band of lapis lazuli, a band of floral inlay and an outer band of red marble.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"hardstones","id":"x38513"},{"text":"marble","id":"AAT11443"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"pietre dure","id":"AAT53615"},{"text":"setting","id":"x42734"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"},{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"veneering","id":"AAT53878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pietre dure, marble, gilt bronze, ebonised wood","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2010EE4684","2010EE4683"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES343602"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES343615"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"L","id":"THES296973"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"L","id":"THES296973"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"L","id":"THES296973"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"table top","id":""}],[{"text":"base","id":""}],[{"text":"finial","id":""}],[{"text":"finial","id":""}],[{"text":"fragment","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Pietre dure"},{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"base"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1840 - 1860","earliest":"1840-01-01","latest":"1860-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"30","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"132","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"71.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Enzo Constantini, Rome, 1971.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Rectangular writing table of ebonised wood with gilt bronze mounts, pietre dure, marble, lapis lazuli.
