This design is recorded as having been painted by Carlo Carlieri (active 1802-1816), a hardstone worker turned painter for the Grand Ducal workshops. \r\n\r\nHardstone mosaic techniques (commessi di pietre dure) emerged in Florence, where Ferdinand de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, founded the Grand Ducal Workshop (Opificio delle Pietre Dure) in 1588. It still operates today under the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Circular, gold-mounted lapis lazuli bonbonniere, the cover with a commesso (stone mosaic) panel depicting a vase of flowers within concentric circles and a white zigzag ribbon border, the base with a ribbon-tied bouquet of flowers within a similar border, with lapis lazuli sides and matted gold mounts.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Opificio delle Pietre Dure","id":"A22274"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"possibly"}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"hardstone","id":"x37572"},{"text":"lapis lazuli","id":"AAT11122"},{"text":"chalcedony","id":"AAT11134"},{"text":"agate","id":"AAT11135"}],"techniques":[{"text":"mounting","id":"AAT81370"},{"text":"pietre dure","id":"AAT53615"},{"text":"setting","id":"x42734"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold mounts, lapis lazuli, chalcedony, agate, malachite, pietre dure","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Plaques & Plaquettes","id":"THES49031"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BW4264","2008BW4344","2008BW4336","2008BW4345"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"71","id":"THES49723"},"free":"","case":"CA013","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"71","id":"THES49723"},"free":"","case":"CA013","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"bonbonniere","id":""}],[{"text":"bonbonniere","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1802","earliest":"1797-01-01","latest":"1806-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"23","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"81","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"190","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"16/9/22","earliest":"2022-09-16","latest":"2022-09-16"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 25/04/24 IW ","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bonbonnière with gold mounts and mosaics of hardstones (lapis lazuli, chalcedony, agate, malachite) Opificio delle Pietre Dure, Florence, ca.1802","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Giusti, Anna Maria. <u>Pietre Dure and the Art of Florentine Inlay</u>.
