This particular design was popular and widely reproduced in micromosaics. \r\n\nAn inscription on the lid indicates the box was gifted to Dr John Macwhirter by Francis Rawdon Hastings (1754-1826). Hastings was an Anglo-Irish politician who fought with distinction in the American War of Independence and in the Napoleonic wars. He commanded the British forces in India and held the title of governor-general from 1813 until 1822, and was later elevated to the titles of Viscount Loudon, Earl of Rawdon and Marquess of Hastings in 1817. The Scottish physician Dr John Macwhirter (1780-1853) had been stationed in India since 1803, first with the army and then as personal physician to the Indian royal family. He was already appointed personal physician to the Governor General, Lord Minto, when the Marquess of Hastings took over in 1813. \r\n\nDr Macwhirter held his employer in high esteem and wrote many letters to the Marquess’ wife, Lady Hastings, in praise of her philanthropy and generosity to the poor. The bonbonnière was likely a gift of gratitude to thank Dr Macwhirter for his service to the Hastings family. \r\n\nWe are grateful to Dr Macwhirter’s descendant, Philip Macwhirter of Melbourne, Australia for the information provided.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Circular, varicoloured gold and micromosaic bonbonnière, the sides and base engine-turned and bordered by oak leaves and acorns, the cover set with a micromosaic of a dog and cat fighting in a landscape, also bordered by an oak wreath in gold, the interior of lid inscribed: 'The gift /of/the Most Noble/ The Marquis of Hastings/ K.G. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. to / John Macwhirter M.D. / A.D 1817'","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Strachan, Alexander James","id":"A5409"},"association":{"text":"goldsmith","id":"AAT25319"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Barberi, Gioacchino","id":"A22310"},"association":{"text":"mosaicists","id":"AAT25276"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mosaic glass","id":"AAT260731"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"micromosaic","id":"x42499"},{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"engine turning","id":"AAT233401"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Micromosaic and raised, chased, and engraved varicoloured gold","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Plaques & Plaquettes","id":"THES49031"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BU1978","2008BU2059","2008BU1960","2018KX8381","2018KX8382"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"72","id":"THES49722"},"free":"","case":"CA005","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"72","id":"THES49722"},"free":"","case":"CA005","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"bonbonniere base","id":""}],[{"text":"bonbonniere lid","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1807-1808","earliest":"1807-05-29","latest":"1808-05-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"7.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"2.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 26/04/24 IW","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Mark of Alexander James Strachan, goldsmith registered in London, September 21, 1799 -
