This mosaic is copied from a published engraving, which was a popular method of producing mosaic designs.\r\n\r\nThe term 'micromosaic' is used to describe mosaics made of the smallest glass pieces. Some micromosaics contain more than 5000 pieces per square inch. The earliest attempts at micromosaic revealed visible joins between the pieces (known as tesserae) and a lack of perspective. Later artists such as Antonio Aguatti made huge advances in micromosaic technique, resulting in renderings that were truer to life. Glass micromosaic technique developed in the 18th century, in the Vatican Mosaic Workshop in Rome, which continues to undertake restoration work today. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Circular bonbonniere, the granite body mounted in gold and set on the cover with a micromosaic of Ponte Lucano, the tomb of the Plautii in the background.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"granite","id":"AAT11183"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"mosaic glass","id":"AAT260731"}],"techniques":[{"text":"setting","id":"x42734"},{"text":"setting","id":"x42734"},{"text":"micromosaic","id":"x42499"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Granite, gold mounts, micromosaic","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Mosaic","id":"THES253095"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BU2618","2008BU2590","2008BU2321","2008BU2320"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"72","id":"THES49722"},"free":"","case":"CA005","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"72","id":"THES49722"},"free":"","case":"CA005","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"bonbonniere","id":""}],[{"text":"bonbonniere","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1800","earliest":"1795-01-01","latest":"1804-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"5.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"2.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Kugel, Paris.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bonbonniere with Lucano bridge, micromosaic, gold and granite, Rome, 1800.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Truman, Charles. <u>The Gilbert collection of gold boxes</u>, Vol. I.
