Louis XVI of France was a particular enthusiast, and his engine-turning machine or tour a guillocher, built by Mercklein, still survives in Paris in the Musée des Arts et Metiers. George III of England was also a keen ivory turner. A gold mounted ivory snuffbox by him can be seen in the Royal Collections. \r\n\r\nThe turned ivory panels are set in a gold box by Louis-Claude Porcher, a Paris goldsmith active between 1762 and 1791.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Gold, resin and ivory bonbonniere, the cover, walls and base of ivory, turned and pierced on a lathe with concentric patterns and applied over silver foil enamelled translucent red and green.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Porcher, Louis-Claude","id":"A22466"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"resin","id":"AAT12882"}],"techniques":[{"text":"setting","id":"x42734"},{"text":"piercing","id":"AAT231153"},{"text":"turning","id":"AAT53158"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold, enamel, pierced and turned ivory","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BU2186","2008BU2265","2008BU2264","2008BU2263"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"021","id":"THES404610"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"021","id":"THES404610"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"bonbonniere base","id":""}],[{"text":"bonbonniere cover","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1767-8","earliest":"1767-01-01","latest":"1768-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"5.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"2.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 26/04/24 IW","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Mark of Louis-Claude Porcher, goldsmith registered in Paris, July 26, 1762-at least 1791","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the lid, in the base, and in the wall"},{"content":"Charge mark of the adjudicataire des fermes générales unies Jean-Jacque Prévost, Paris, November 22, 1762-December 22, 1768","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the lid, in the base, and in the wall"},{"content":"Warden's mark for Paris, July 13, 1768-July 11, 1769","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the lid, in the base, and in the wall"},{"content":"Discharge mark of the adjudicataire des fermes générales unies Julien Alatarre, Paris, December 23, 1768-August 31, 1775","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On the bezel"}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Sale, Christie's, Geneva, lot 541, May 14, 1986.
