The artist could be either Louis-Nicholas van Blarenberghe (1716-69) or his son Henri-Joseph (1741-1826) whose styles are indistinguishable. The van Blarenberghe family originated in Leyden but moved to Paris in 1751. At least five members of the family were painters of miniatures but as they rarely signed either their first name or initials, their work is difficult to attribute. The rural scenes shown here are typical of their output.\r\n\r\nAnge-Joseph Aubert, responsible for making the box, was principally a diamond merchant and jeweller rather than a goldsmith. He was the <i>joaillier du Roi</i> and in 1773 moved into lodgings in the Palais du Louvre. Amongst his known commissions was the <i>corbeille de mariage</i> for the comtesse d'Artois. This was a basket of sumptuous gifts given by the bridegroom to the bride. The comtesse d'Artois's basket cost the enormous sum of 124 565 <i>livres</i>, with one box alone costing 19 642 <i>livres</i> .\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes.
