They physically, but not visually separated the lay congregation from the priest celebrating mass. \r\n\r\nThese balustrades are inlaid with white and coloured marbles. The tradition of marble inlaid ecclesiastical ornaments and architectural fittings, known as <i>marmi commessi</i>, goes back to Medieval times. Cosimo Fanzago (1591-1678) was the foremost 17th century artist working in this technique. His influence on Neapolitan craftsmen continued well after his death. These balustrades are examples for the popularity of the style in the first half of the 18th century.\r\n\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"A pair of altar balustrades made of white marble with red and yellow marble inlay on the sides and on the altar rails.
