Mario was renowned for his reproduction of paintings and portraits across a variety of subjects. ‘Roman idyll’, is a reproduction of a painting by Raffaello Sorbi (1844-1931) that showcases Mario’s interest in impressionistic painting techniques. Traditionally, designs are transposed to commessi panels by dividing the pictorial model into a graphic pattern of colour block shapes, used as a guide for selecting and cutting the pieces of stone. Mario developed a new technique of giving each piece of stone irregular, wavy edges to better imitate the effect of rapidly painted brushstrokes associated with painting en plein air. By matching the colour of each irregular-shaped stone to a specific shade of paint he achieved, in stone, the desired overall effect of dappled sunlight.\r\n\r\nTo find out more about the making of pietre dure, watch the video Making a Pietre Dure panel (http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/videos/m/video-making-a-pietre-dure-panel)\r\n","physicalDescription":"Hardstone picture signed by Montelatici showing a young man and woman seated and holding hands in a garden.
