It is the only known piece of furniture to show micromosaics not only on the top, but also on the curved surfaces of the pedestal. The imagery is typical for pro-Italian art of the era, and shows the god Apollo in his chariot at the centre of the table top, surrounded by allegories of the Four Seasons and Elements. The depiction of Earth under Apollo can be read as a personification of Italy which was taken from antiquity and became a symbol of Italian unification.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.\r\n\r\nOn long-term loan to Los Angeles County Museum from 2010.","physicalDescription":"Octagonal tabletop with a white ground mosaic depicting Apollo in the centre within a square reserve with a convex lobe on each side. These are connected to four quatrefoil reserves with figures of putti with flowers which alternate with four bust-length allegorical figures of the Elements. The octagonal pedestal base has a spreading eight-lobed octagonal foot resting on eight gilt-bronze tortoises and is decorated with four panels of micromosaic depicting the Seasons.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"gilt bronze","id":"x35084"},{"text":"micro mosaic","id":"x42885"}],"techniques":[{"text":"micromosaic","id":"x42499"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"},{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Micromosaic, gilt bronze, carved wood","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2010EJ5060","2010EM4607","2010EM4609","2010EM4610","2010EM4733"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES340831"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES340831"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"tabletop","id":""}],[{"text":"base","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1861-90","earliest":"1861-01-01","latest":"1890-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"85.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"133.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"81.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Florence Goldman, New York, 1972.
