Some micromosaics contain more than 5000 pieces per square inch. The earliest attempts at micromosaic revealed visible joins between the pieces (known as tesserae) and a lack of perspective. Later artists such as Antonio Aguatti made huge advances in micromosaic technique, resulting in renderings that were truer to life. Glass micromosaic technique developed in the 18th century, in the Vatican Mosaic Workshop in Rome, where they still undertake restoration work today. \r\n\nDomenico Moglia was among the most accomplished mosaicists in the mid-19th century. His international clientele included King George IV of England (r.1820-30) for whom he made a micromosaic portrait after a painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence, now at the Royal Pavilion, Brighton. He was also probably the same Moglia mentioned in Russia in 1816-19 who tutored Georgi Wekler (see Loan:Gilbert.220-2008 and Loan:Gilbert.877-2008). This large-format plaque and another in the Gilbert Collection (Loan:Gilbert.183-2008) were exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 alongside micromosaics by his son, Luigi, who won a gold medal there. \n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"A rectangle of black marble set with a micromosaic of the Colosseum, a fountain in front of it and to its right a triumphal arch.
