In 273 BC the Romans conquered the settlement and renamed it Paestum. The ruins were rediscovered and excavated in the 18th century and attracted tourists from across Europe.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Large rectangular micromosaic depicting the ancient Greek and Roman ruins at Paestum. The picture shows three ruined temples in a landscape, with grazing cattle and a herdsman. In the left foreground is a pile of stone ruins and on the right two large trees. Five figures in peasant costume are seated and standing in the lower foreground. The mosaic is signed in the lower right 'G.V.Rinaldi' and is within a gilt frame.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rinaldi, Gioacchino","id":"A22474"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mosaic glass","id":"AAT260731"},{"text":"gilt wood","id":"x35094"}],"techniques":[{"text":"micromosaic","id":"x42499"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"},{"text":"framing","id":"AAT240903"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Glass micromosaic with gilt wood frame","categories":[{"text":"Mosaic","id":"THES253095"},{"text":"Landscapes","id":"THES250800"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009CP2616"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES409062"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES409062"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"picture","id":""}],[{"text":"frame","id":"AAT189814"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1830","earliest":"1825-01-01","latest":"1834-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"190","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"163.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"unframed","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"75","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"17.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 26/04/24 IW","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed in the lower right hand corner 'G.V. South Audley Art Galleries, London, 1975.\n\nHistorical significance: Rinaldi specialised in <i>caminiera</i>, large mosaic pictures to be hung over fireplaces. It is probable that the Gilbert version was similarly intended.","historicalContext":"The two temples at Paestum are the Temple of Neptune (460 BC) and the Temple of Hera (about 1550-525 BC). Over 500 depictions of the area were executed between 1764 and 1769. Rinaldi executed six versions of this picture and this particular version took five years to complete. There are other versions in the Hermitage and at Anglesey Abbey. The source, a painting by the Russain artist, Feodor Matveev (1758-1826) was commissioned by the owner of Ickworth (National Trust), Frederick Hervey, 7th Earl of Bristol (1730-1803).","briefDescription":"The Ruins of Paestum.
