The scenes are in the style of Claude Lorraine (1600-82), and the central panel is based on his painting <i>Landscape with the Father of Psyche Sacrificing to Apollo</i>.\r\n\r\nThe term 'micromosaic' is used to describe mosaics made of the smallest glass pieces. Some micromosaics contain more than 5000 pieces per square inch. The earliest attempts at micromosaic revealed visible joins between the pieces (known as tesserae) and a lack of perspective. Later artists such as Antonio Aguatti made huge advances in micromosaic technique, resulting in renderings that were truer to life. Glass micromosaic technique developed in the 18th century, in the Vatican Mosaic Workshop in Rome, where they still undertake restoration work today. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Necklace composed of nine oval Roman mosaic plaques with landscapes of the Campagna and one of a spaniel on the clasp, all are set in blue glass and mounted in plain gold filets.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Antonio Aguatti","id":"A22301"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28674"},"note":"Attributed to"},{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"","id":""}],"techniques":[{"text":"cut","id":"x35680"},{"text":"micromosaic","id":"x42499"},{"text":"moulding","id":"x46876"},{"text":"","id":""}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Mosaics, cut blue glass, and moulded gold.","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BW3420","2008BW3443","2008BW3421","2018KT2610","2018KT2620","2018KT2621","2018KT2625"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES410173"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"032","id":"THES410334"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"necklace","id":""}],[{"text":"case","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1810","earliest":"1810-01-01","latest":"1810-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"ca."}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"46","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Hancocks and Co., London, 1974.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Necklace of ten micromosaics of landscapes, attributed to Antonio Aguatti, Rome ca.1810.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Avery, Charles, assisted by Arthur Emperatori. <i>Mosaics from the Gilbert Collection: summary catalogue</i>.
