They may also contain holy water or reliquaries. Predominantly they are incorporated into the architectural structure of a church altar. Smaller, portable tabernacles were also used for travelling purposes and domestic worship. \r\n\r\nFrom the 17th Century onwards, hardstones were increasingly popular for ecclesiastical interiors and objects. This tabernacle has been constructed around the c. 1580 hardstone mosaic panel mounted in the door. The central oval is dark red agate (probably from India) surrounded by a ring of banded of agate, with fluted dark yellow jasper scrolls. The yellow jasper scrolls are outlined with a thin lead strip to keep the stones in place. The metal edging and style is of a typical geometric design pattern found in Rome and Northern Italy in the second half of the 16th century.\r\n\r\nThe tabernacle structure that houses the central panel shows inconsistencies in the quality, placement and decoration of stone and bronze elements, with elements dating from 17th to 19th centuries. The metal mounts are not structural, instead functionin to conceal where genuine the 16th-century panels and newer the components meet. The wood structure is also showing signs of having been altered and even aged artificially. These composite elements are evidence that the tabernacle was assembled somewhere between 1800-1970. \r\n","physicalDescription":"Wooden tabernacle of architectural form, decorated with hardstone, marble and gilt bronze, with square base, completely covered by panels of stone with gilded bronze mounts; designed as a church facade with coupled pilasters on either side of the central doorway carrying a simple architrave that terminates in a curvilinear broken pediment","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"hardstones","id":"x38513"},{"text":"marble","id":"AAT11443"},{"text":"agate","id":"AAT11135"},{"text":"alabaster","id":"AAT11101"},{"text":"lapis lazuli","id":"AAT11122"},{"text":"gilt bronze","id":"x35084"},{"text":"gilt copper","id":"x34723"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"},{"text":"amethyst","id":"AAT11133"},{"text":"obsidian","id":"AAT11254"},{"text":"aventurine","id":"AAT11154"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"pietre dure","id":"AAT53615"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved marble, cast gilt bronze and pietre dure","categories":[{"text":"Architectural fittings","id":"THES48994"},{"text":"Hardstone","id":"THES270137"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2010EJ5201","2024NW9701","2024NW9678","2024NW9657","2024NW9656","2024NW9655","2024NW9654","2024NW9653","2024NW9652","2024NW9651","2010EM4611","2010EJ5206","2010EJ5204","2010EJ5203","2010EJ5200","2010EJ5197","2010EJ5198","2022NF8376","2023NP0723"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"71A","id":"THES413997"},"free":"","case":"CA006","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"71A","id":"THES413997"},"free":"","case":"CA006","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES404527"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"71A","id":"THES413997"},"free":"","case":"CA006","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"71A","id":"THES413997"},"free":"","case":"CA006","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"71A","id":"THES413997"},"free":"","case":"CA006","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"tabernacle","id":"AAT207778"}],[{"text":"plinth","id":""}],[{"text":"key","id":""}],[{"text":"Mounts","id":"AAT171585"}],[{"text":"Door","id":"AAT2803"}],[{"text":"Panel","id":"x47676"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":"for previous cataloguing - see word document in Gilbert Digital folder "},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome (city)","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1800-1970","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1970-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"19th and 20th century; the central panel, circa 1580 "},{"date":{"text":"1580","earliest":"1580-01-01","latest":"1580-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"the central panel, circa 1580"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"57","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"34.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"29","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"13800","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This tabernacle has been constructed around the late 16th century hardstone mosaic panel mounted in the door.
