This type of marble, also known as Grand Antique marble or Bianco e nero antico (black and white antique), was highly prized in Roman times.\n\r\nBy the 19th century this specific kind of marble was so rare that the interest of patrons of tables like the present piece was focused on displaying the antique stone. The border design of the slab is closely related to 16th century Roman examples, whereas the table reinterprets the style of French furniture from the period of Louis XIV.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Rectangular tabletop, the central panel consists of fragments of Grand Antique marble or Bianco e nero antico ('black and white antique'). The centre panel is edged with a wave pattern in yellow and old rose. The outer border of brocatello has a series of cartouches, with shields at each corner and arabesque patterns of black marble, fior di pesco, onyx, lapis lazuli, alabaster and giallo antico (yellow antique marble). The outer rim of the tabletop is of verde antico marble. The baroque-style base is carved fruitwood.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"hardstones","id":"x38513"},{"text":"marble","id":"AAT11443"},{"text":"fruitwood","id":"AAT137731"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"pietre dure","id":"AAT53615"},{"text":"inlay (process)","id":"AAT53850"},{"text":"forming","id":"AAT53098"},{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pietre dure, marble and fruitwood, carved","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Hardstone","id":"THES270137"},{"text":"Mosaic","id":"THES253095"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2010EE4680"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CLFC (LOAN)","id":"THES50113"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"CLFC (LOAN)","id":"THES50113"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"tabletop","id":""}],[{"text":"base","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"top"},{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"base"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1575 - 1600","earliest":"1575-01-01","latest":"1600-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"top"},{"date":{"text":"1880- 1890","earliest":"1880-01-01","latest":"1890-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"base"},{"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","value":"968","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1746","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"1156","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Provenance: The Right Honourable the Lord Margadale of Islay.
