Micromosaics were often bought as souveniers by visiting travellers, which made scenes from the city they had visited popular, particularly as Rome had been so important in the development and refinement of the technique of micromosaic.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver,  mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes.
