Most English church silverware was destroyed during the Reformation after Henry VIII broke away from the Church of Rome in 1534. While the design and shape of this ciborium were common across Northern Europe, analysis of the silver’s composition suggests it was possibly made in London. This would make this ciborium a rare example of pre-Reformation English religious silver. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Silver-gilt ciborium on a circular foot with flutes, with a double baluster stem.
