The cup sits within a well or raised rim in the saucer which holds it firmly in place. Such cups were popular throughout the 18th century, and originally intended for hot chocolate.\n\nFrom the 1680s, the import of Oriental porcelain in Paris increased, probably influenced by the visits of Siamese embassies to Versailles in 1684 and 1686. This fashion is often attributed to the Parisian marchands-merciers, early interior designers who were allowed to commission and sell, but not to produce, luxury products. They are thought to have embellished porcelain with Parisian silver or silver-gilt mounts to give it a more European profile. The trend developed throughout the 18th century, with pieces also mounted in ormolu (gilt bronze), while the royal factory of Sèvres porcelain produced some remarkable Oriental-style pieces. \n\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Imari porcelain cup, cover and stand decorated with blue and red floral motifs.
