Those manning the numerous ships, barges and tugs on the river are still known as Thames Watermen. The British monarch was no exception and travelled on the Thames between royal palaces and on state occasions. The royal barges were rowed by the Royal Watermen, a select group chosen from the Thames Watermen. Even today, 24 Royal Waterman perform ceremonial functions. They still wear two partly gilded silver badges which are sewn onto the chest of their bright red liveries, the crown on top of the Royal Coat-of-arms.\n\nThis set of watermen's badges is part of the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection, on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum. Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Both were members of the House of Stuart. \r\nThe royal armorial in contrast is that of the Hanoverians.
