The Qutb Minar was started in 1199 as the victory tower of Qutb-ud Din Aibak, commemorating the Muslim dominance of Delhi. It was completed by his successor, Iltutmish, and the top was restored by Firoz Shah in 1369. The picture shows the cupola added by Colonel Robert Smith in 1828 and removed in 1848.\r\n\r\n'Company paintings' were produced by Indian artists for Europeans living and working in the Indian subcontinent, especially British employees of the East India Company. They represent a fusion of traditional Indian artistic styles with conventions and technical features borrowed from western art. Some Company paintings were specially commissioned, while others were virtually mass-produced and could be purchased in bazaars.","physicalDescription":"This view of the Qutb Minar in Delhi shows the cupola added in 1828 and removed in 1848.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"},{"text":"watercolour painting (technique)","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Islam","id":"THES48932"},{"text":"Indian Company Paintings","id":"THES49045"}],"styles":[{"text":"Company","id":"AAT18959"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2011EX3538","2006BE6623"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES403778"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Delhi","id":"x29851"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1836","earliest":"1831-01-01","latest":"1840-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"11","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"18","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"7.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"painted area","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"painted area","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Kutab Minar (1193-1230) The two top storeys rebuilt by Firoz Shah (1288-93).","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"English","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"Roman","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"English; Roman"},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed with titles on back in English and on front in Persian characters."}],"objectHistory":"The drawings are recorded as being by 'native' droughtsmen of the Delhi School in the Office of the Honourable East India Company's Superintendent of Public Buildings and Ancient Monuments at Calcutta, ca.1836.\r\n\r\nThese set of drawings are of Mughal monuments in the Delhi area in a landscape setting. \r\nThey are almost identical to a set collected in Delhi by Sir Thomas Metcalfe, ca.1840, some of which were by Mazar Ali Khan and published in Kaye, 1980.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Architectural; drawing, Qutb Minar, Delhi, ca.1836","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Archer, Mildred. <u> Company Paintings Indian Paintings of the British period</u> \r\nVictoria and Albert Museum Indian Series London: Victoria and Albert Museum, Maplin Publishing, 1992 147 p.
