Its form generally followed that of teapots, with the exception of the position of the handle. By about 1725 the tripod stand enclosing a lamp had become a standard. The addition of a circular salver to the kettle ensemble is relatively unusual and was perhaps used to for placing the kettle on the floor on a table separate from the rest of the tea service, as sometimes visible in paintings.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Circular, silver salver standing on four scroll feet with grotesque masks above; it has a reed-and-shell border and is engraved with the coat of arms of Sir John Lesquesne in a rococo cartouche within a flat chased surround of scrolls, trelliswork and shells","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lamerie, Paul de","id":"A8591"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"flat chasing","id":"AAT233402"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, raised, cast, engraved, flat chased","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009CA2605","2009CA2631","2009CA2681","2009CA2680","2009CA2671"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES403895"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"salver","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"assayed","id":"x42656"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1737-1738","earliest":"1737-05-29","latest":"1738-05-28"},"association":{"text":"hallmarked","id":"x32454"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"LOAN:GILBERT.675:1-2008","id":"O166552"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"LOAN:GILBERT.675:2-2008","id":"O166552"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"LOAN:GILBERT.675:3-2008","id":"O166552"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"LOAN:GILBERT.675:4-2008","id":"O166552"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"26.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"879","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Scratch weight is 32 = 3","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"date mark 1737-38","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"mark of Paul de Lamerie on reverse of salver","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Sir John Lesquesne, London.
