There is, for example, a bias-cut inset panel on the back of the jacket. This provides a variation of pattern which is emphasised by the curved seams running from shoulder to hem.\r\n\r\nOnce attributed to John Cavanagh, this suit is now believed to be by the House of Creed. Creed was a family tailoring firm established in London in 1710 and in Paris in 1850. In the early 1900s they launched womenswear collections. This suit was probably designed by Charles Creed, who had served apprenticeships in Vienna and at Linton Tweeds in Cumbria. In 1942 he became a member of the Incorporated Society of London Fashion Designers, the team behind the Utility prototype designs of the same year.","physicalDescription":"Brown and cream wool tweed skirt suit, the jacket lined with beige rayon, with padded shoulders, two patch pockets and button fastening","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Creed, Charles","id":"A10184"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":"probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Utility","id":"A2828"},"association":{"text":"designed for","id":"x41471"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Incorporated Society of London Fashion Designers","id":"AUTH383043"},"association":{"text":"producer (collection)","id":"x30781"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool (textile)","id":"AAT243430"},{"text":"rayon","id":"AAT14059"}],"techniques":[{"text":"tailoring","id":"x39134"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Day wear","id":"THES49000"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BF2901","2010EL1256","2010EL1252"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES307578"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES307578"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jacket","id":""}],[{"text":"Skirt","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"autumn 1942","earliest":"1942-01-01","latest":"1942-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Board of Trade","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Weight","value":"1.78","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Jacket and skirt","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"67.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"of back","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"T.48-1942","note":"measurement converted from department register"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"41.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"across shoulders","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"T.48-1942","note":"measurement converted from department register"},{"dimension":"Length","value":"69.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"T.48A-1942","note":"measurement converted from department register"},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"68.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"T.48A-1942","note":"measurement converted from department register"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Skirt suit, 1942, British; Utility, probably designed by Charles Creed.
