Its naturalistic shape resembling a halved gourd resembles that of the famous cup incised with the emperor's titles dated to the equivalent of 1657, also in the V&A (IS.12-1962) and the quality and style of the floral decoration are all consistent with other pieces made during his reign. \r\nThe cup came from the collection of Colonel Charles Seton Guthrie, much of which was bought by the Indian Museum in 1868, and was transferred to the South Kensington Museum in 1879.","physicalDescription":"The cup is of asymmetrical lobed form resembling a halved gourd. Its five tapering lobes converge towards the spiral stem that forms the cup's handle. Five acanthus leaves run from the base, one curling outwards to form a minute volute projecting from the side of the cup in an echo of the shape of the handle. The base is in the form of a lotus blossom in high relief, with a stem emerging from behind the acanthus leaves, and two narcissus flowers.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"jade","id":"x36435"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"White nephrite jade","categories":[{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"},{"text":"Hardstone","id":"THES270137"}],"styles":[{"text":"Mughal court","id":"x30977"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2017JV0777","2017KB6298","2017KB6354"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES394878"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Wine cup","id":"AAT218966"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Mughal empire","id":"THES262021"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1650-1658","earliest":"1645-01-01","latest":"1658-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"13.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"8.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"From the collection of Colonel Guthrie.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"White nephrite jade, Mughal.
