This dinner service had been commissioned by Bernard Edward Howard (1765–1842), the 12th Duke of Norfolk, after he inherited the title in 1815. Large parts of the service were sold in the 1960s and 1970s by descendent family members.\r\n\r\nRosalinde and Arthur Gilbert formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes.
