The wearer could choose between the two most popular decorative themes - with either the monuments of Rome or figures in regional costume uppermost. \r\n\r\nThe term 'micromosaic' is used to describe mosaics made of the smallest glass pieces. Some micromosaics contain more than 5000 pieces per square inch. The earliest attempts at micromosaic revealed visible joins between the pieces (known as tesserae) and a lack of perspective. Later artists such as Antonio Aguatti made huge advances in micromosaic technique, resulting in renderings that were truer to life. Glass micromosaic technique developed in the 18th century, in the Vatican Mosaic Workshop in Rome, where they still undertake restoration work today. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Part of a suite of jewellery comprising a necklace, bracelet and pair of earrings, all composed of chain-linked ovals of micromosaic set into blue glass bordered in a silver, copper and gold alloy. This set is unique in that it has mosaics on both sides, one side depicting Italian peasants in regional costumes, the other depicting monuments and ruins.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"},{"text":"mosaic glass","id":"AAT260731"},{"text":"alloy","id":"AAT10902"}],"techniques":[{"text":"setting","id":"x42734"},{"text":"micromosaic","id":"x42499"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold silver copper alloy, with blue glass and micromosaic.","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BV3874","2008BV3888","2024NX5778","2024NX5777","2024NX5776","2024NX5775","2024NX5774","2024NX5773","2024NX5772","2024NX5771","2008BW3428","2008BV3871"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"72","id":"THES49722"},"free":"","case":"CA003","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"bracelet","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1850","earliest":"1845-01-01","latest":"1854-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"LOAN:GILBERT.150:1-2008","id":"O158130"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"LOAN:GILBERT.152:1-2008","id":"O156821"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"LOAN:GILBERT.152:2-2008","id":"O156821"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"1.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"18","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"0.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 19/04/24 IW ","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"Mosaics of peasants were often based on engravings by Bartolomeo Pinelli (1781-1835) which were published in Rome in 1816.","briefDescription":"Bracelet.
