This chain is one of only two known 17th-century examples of its kind to have survived. It belonged to Sir Orlando Bridgeman (1609–74), a judge in the Court of the Exchequer.\n\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Chain, made up of twenty-five openwork gold knots, each terminating in four tassels alternating with twenty-six thistle blossoms forming S-shapes; the Tudor Rose clasp is attached to the chain links by portcullises on either side.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BW3430","2008BW3431"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"70B","id":"THES413996"},"free":"","case":"CA004","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"chain","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1660","earliest":"1655-01-01","latest":"1664-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"LOAN:GILBERT.55:2-2008","id":"O163885"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"178","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"5.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"rose","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"4.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"ca.","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"thickness of links of chain","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"724g","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"18/10/2011","earliest":"2011-10-18","latest":"2011-10-18"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 19/02/24 IW","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Sir Orlando Bridgeman; Matthew Hale; Sir Edward Turnour; Hon.
