She was an extravagant patroness of baroque architecture, the Winter Palace in St Petersburg being a notable example from her reign. The miniature of the Empress set inside the lid is based on the state portrait by French painter Louis Caravaque (1684-1754). This box was probably made in Dresden or Augsburg.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Rectangular amethystine quartz snuffbox, the cover encrusted with gold chased as a reserve of scrolls and rocailles around an Imperially crowned Rococo cartouche enclosing the initials E P (for Elizabeth Petrovna) set between double-headed eagles and olive branches. The bombe walls are set at the front with the Order of St. Andrew the First Called within further scrolls and rocailles; the interior of the lid is set with a miniature, under rock crystal, of the Empress Elizabeth Petrovna (1709-62), shown bust length, crowned and wearing an ermine-bordered yellow robe over a jewelled dress and the sash of the Order of St. Andrew.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"quartz","id":"AAT11132"},{"text":"quartz crystal","id":"AAT11152"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"setting","id":"x42734"},{"text":"mounting","id":"AAT81370"},{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold and amethystine quartz, set with a miniature on ivory under rock crystal.","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[{"text":"Rococo","id":"AAT21155"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BU2078","2008BU2090","2008BU2089","2008BU2079","2008BU2001","2008BU2000"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"71","id":"THES49723"},"free":"","case":"CA018","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"snuffbox","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Dresden","id":"x28810"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"},{"place":{"text":"Augsburg","id":"x32552"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"},{"place":{"text":"Russia","id":"x29110"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1755","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1759-12-31"},"association":{"text":"marked","id":"x32454"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","value":"44","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"88","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"14.3.23","earliest":"2023-03-14","latest":"2023-03-14"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"79","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 22/01/24 ","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Mark for gold imported from countries without customs conventions with France, 24 October, 1864 - 31 May, 1893","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On the left bezel"},{"content":"Cypher <font -i>EP</font> for the Empress Elizabeth Petrovna","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia, 1904.
