As Charles X, the subject of the miniature, did not become King of France until 1824, it seems likely that the box was later adapted to include the portrait which dates from 1820. Charles X had a troublesome reign. His often reactionary policies caused increasing unrest, cultimating in an insurrection against his rule and his eventual abdication in 1830.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes.
