The cameo, which pre-dates the box (about 1750-1800), depicts two figures in a chariot, possibly Bacchus, god of wine, and Ariadne.  \n\r\nStone cameos scenes were an in-demand Italian export. British goldsmith John Northam cleverly integrated an earlier cameo into this box, restoring the scene’s broken edges by extending its design of vine leaves with gold chasing. The Gilbert Collection holds five boxes by Northam, each mounted with panels of different materials.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes.  Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Rectangular gold snuffbox, the cover set with a late eighteenth century Roman cameo possibly representing Bacchus and Ariadne, riding in a chariot drawn by leopards with putti and a satyr in attendance, in an oval reserve.
