The miniature of Madame de Maintenon (1635-1719) was added later to this box. She was the second wife of Louis XIV of France, although the marriage was never publicly acknowledged. The miniature was painted in the second half of the nineteenth century, probably in France. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Oval gold snuffbox enamelled <i>en plein</i> in yellow over an engine-turned ground, the cover bordered by chased gold foliage enamelled in translucent green, 'pearls' and pellets in translucent red, with a blue and white fillet within. The centre was later set with a miniature, under glass, of Madame de Maintenon, bust length, turned three quarters to the right, in the style of Petitot, within an opaque white frame. The walls are divided by pilasters and bordered in opaque white 'pearls', translucent green foliage and red berries, and the yellow-enamelled base is similarly bordered.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Blerzy, Joseph-Etienne","id":"A14796"},"association":{"text":"box maker","id":"x40982"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"enamelling","id":"x37485"},{"text":"glazing (glass)","id":"AAT53676"},{"text":"guilloché (engraving technique)","id":"THES383868"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold, enamel, glazed miniature","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Enamels","id":"THES48876"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BU2335","2008BU2572","2008BU2571","2008BU2570"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"71","id":"THES49723"},"free":"","case":"CA011","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"snuffbox","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1776-77","earliest":"1776-01-01","latest":"1777-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1850-1900","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"8.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"6.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"3.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 02/05/24 IW ","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Mark of Joseph-Etienne Blerzy","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the base and in the front wall"},{"content":"Marks for Paris ca. 1776-1777","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the base, in the front wall, and on the right side of the bezel"},{"content":"Restricted warranty mark for Paris, 10 May, 1838 onwards","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On the right side of the bezel"},{"content":"Stamped '552'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On the left side of the bezel"}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: George IV of England to Lord Glenlyon.
