This version of the scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses derives from an engraving by François Chauveau, published in Paris in 1676. In Ovid's account Diana subsituted a stag for Iphigenia at the last moment and took her away to be a priestess. Symbols of the four elements (earth, air, fire and water) appear on the sides of the box.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Rectangular gold snuffbox, the cover finely chased and depicting the sacrifice of Iphigenia to the goddess Diana, bordered by reeded gold and four trellised cartouches, the walls chased with birds and a dog in landscapes with strapwork and foliage, the base with a cartouche enclosing a later engraved crest, a pelican's head erased, vulning herself, ducally gorged, and the motto \"IN SANGUINE VITA\", flanked by birds and animals on a matted ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Burel","id":"A22343"},"association":{"text":"chaser","id":"x39828"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold, raised and chased","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BU2345","2008BV3934","2008BV3924","2008BV3923","2008BV3918","2008BV3912","2008BV3904","2014HG0471","2014HG0476"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES410179"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"snuffbox","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"chased","id":"AAT54016"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1720","earliest":"1715-01-01","latest":"1724-12-31"},"association":{"text":"chased","id":"AAT54016"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"9.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"7.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"2.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 29/01/24 IW","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Pelican's head erased, vulning herself, ducally gorged, with motto 'IN SANGUINE VITA'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"In the blood the life","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Engraved with crest and motto of the Cobbe family, Hampshire."},{"content":"BVREL FECIT","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Signature of chaser, Burel, on the front edge of the cover, beneath the figure scene"}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Lord Wharton, London.
