He gave him considerable freedom to produce designs in the fullest and most imaginative rococo taste. This salver and its companion were produced in the middle of de Lamerie's career, when his powers of inventiveness were at their zenith and they are part of one of the most interesting groups of English 18th century plate ever produced.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Standing on four pierced feet modeled with lion masks, the border with masks of the four seasons, the surface with a band of flowers, scrolls and shells and the centre engraved with a coat of arms.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lamerie, Paul de","id":"A8591"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"flat chasing","id":"AAT233402"},{"text":"tooling","id":"AAT53876"},{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Raised, cast, chased, flat-chased, tooled and engraved silver","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Heraldry","id":"THES257728"},{"text":"Silver","id":"THES251836"}],"styles":[{"text":"Rococo","id":"AAT21155"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009CA2679","2009CA2682","2009CA2678","2009CA2629","2009CA2628"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES409944"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"salver","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"assayed","id":"x42656"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1741-1742","earliest":"1741-05-29","latest":"1742-05-28"},"association":{"text":"hallmarked","id":"x32454"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"LOAN:GILBERT.729-2008","id":"O156677"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"47","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"3254","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Scratch weight: 100-15 and 105-5 1/2","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"London hallmarks for 1741-42.
