The silver masks and sprays of flowers were cast separately and then applied to the salver.\r\n\r\nWhen the Catholic King Louis XIV revoked the religiously tolerant Edict of Nantes in 1685, Huguenots (French Protestants) were forced to leave the country. Many were craftsmen who settled in London. Their technical skills and fashionable French style ensured the luxury silver, furniture, watches and jewellery they made were highly sought after. Huguenot specialists transformed English silver by introducing higher standards of craftsmanship. They promoted new forms, such as the soup tureen and sauceboat, and introduced a new repertoire of ornament, with cast sculptural details and exquisite engraving.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"A circular salver resting on four scroll-and-mask feet, the border is an elaborate compilation of chased fluting and vertebral ornament along with applied sprays of foliage and masks all on a punched matted ground. At the centre are the arms, probably, of Ashborne within a rococo cartouche. The interior edge of the border is decorated with flat-chasing of scrolls, flowers, and shells all on a tooled metal ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lamerie, Paul de","id":"A8591"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"flat chasing","id":"AAT233402"},{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"punching","id":"AAT235631"},{"text":"tooling","id":"AAT53876"},{"text":"matting","id":"x37486"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cast, chased, engraved and punched and tooled matted ground silver","categories":[{"text":"Food vessels & Tableware","id":"THES48952"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009CR4161","2009CC8135","2009CR4162"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404009"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"salver","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"assayed","id":"x42656"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1739-1740","earliest":"1739-05-29","latest":"1740-05-28"},"association":{"text":"hallmarked","id":"x32454"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"30.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"1660","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Scratch weight: 54=0\r\nUpdated with measurements taken 18/08/08","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Engraved with the arms probably of the Ashborne family.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"London hallmarks for 1739-40","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Mark of Paul de Lamerie","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"The coat of arms are probably those of Ashborne. The exact arms depicted here -Gules, on a fess or between three crescents as many mullets - are not recorded; the closest, blazoned Argent, on a fess between three crescents gules as many mullets argent (or or), are for Ashborne or Asherburn (Schroder, T., 1988, p.242).\r\r\nProvenance\r\nAcquired by Arthur Gilbert from S.J. Phillips Ltd, London, 1982\n\nHistorical significance: No salver identical to this is known among the works of Paul de Lamerie, although various comparable examples may be cited: a less elaborate salver of 1725 is illustrated by Phillips (1935, pl. CX), as is a salad dish of 1725 (Phillips, 1935, pl. XLV) with very similar masks and foliage sprays applied to the border. The eccentric cast feet issuing from grotesque masks are also found in a variety of contexts, including a kettle stand of 1737 in the Gilbert Collection (1996.870, cat. no. 58, Schroder, 1988, pp.229-30). Although the style of the flat-chasing is typical of Paul de Lamerie, the engraved cartouche is unusual. The imaginative use of waterfall motifs in the design may have been inspired by the engravings of Jacques de Lajoue (see Roland Michel, 1982, fig. 200).
