This is one of a pair of mugs; the other, hallmarked for 1719 and engraved with the same arms, is in the collection at Colonial Williamsburg (Davis, 1976, cat. no. 58). Mugs and tankards are curiously uncommon in Paul de Lamerie's work (see cat. no. 46). Apart from the pair to this mug, fewer than half a dozen, all plain, are recorded, dating from 1713 to 1746. The most unusual of these are a set of four in two sizes, hallmarked 1746, plain to the point of austerity, with slightly tapering sides, plain C - scroll handles and without feet (sold Christie's, July 12 1983, lot 195).
