It produced this mosaic and still operates today under the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage. \n\nThis snuffbox is one of very few examples which are documented in the archives of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure. Its designs are after the painter Antonio Cioci (active 1771–92) who embraced the neoclassical style with its musical, agricultural and love trophies. Interestingly, they were not initially intended for a snuffbox but to ornament the frames of the commessi series 'The Arts', produced between 1776 and 1780.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.\r\n\r\nWe are grateful to Thomas Greenaway for his help in identifying the stones (2022). \r\n","physicalDescription":"Oval, mosaics of hardstones including Egyptian nephrite, calcedonio di Volterra and varieties of jaspers, the cover with a mosaic of a lute, French horn and music sheet, the base with a violin and bow with music sheet the sides with light and dark triangles above a frieze of interlaced ribbons enclosing quatrefoils, the gold mount of the cover is chased with overlapping circlets, gold mounts.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"grand ducal","id":"A22264"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"Probably Galleria dei Lavori (Grand Ducal workshops)"}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"hardstone","id":"x37572"},{"text":"nephrite","id":"THES286904"},{"text":"jasper","id":"AAT11151"},{"text":"hardstone","id":"x37572"}],"techniques":[{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"pietre dure","id":"AAT53615"},{"text":"","id":""}],"materialsAndTechniques":"nephrite, pietre dure, gold","categories":[{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BW4122","2008BV4353","2008BV4280","2008BV4279","2008BV4278"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"71","id":"THES49723"},"free":"","case":"CA013","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"snuffbox","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence (city)","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1795","earliest":"1790-01-01","latest":"1799-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","value":"33","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"93","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"68","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"260","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"16/9/22","earliest":"2022-09-16","latest":"2022-09-16"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 25/04/24 IW ","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Provenance: The Jack and Belle Linsky Collection; sale, Sotheby's New York, 6 & 8 December 1993, lot 219; S.J.
