A highly cultivated admirer of the arts, the king was himself a gifted musician, composer and linguist. This box is made from two separately struck sheets of silver, with applied rims. The medal on the base celebrates Frederick's victories in Silesia and is signed by Johann Melchior Morikofer. Inside are a series of paper roundels designed by G. Eichler, published in 1763, and engraved by B. Hubner with scenes from the wars for Silesia (1740-63). The rims are probably by Jakob Langenbucher II or III.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Circular silver medal, the obverse struck with a portrait of Frederick II the Great of Prussia, facing left, wearing an ermine-lined cloak embroidered with crowns over armour, the reverse with a figure of Victory writing 'SAE/ CU/ LUM/ FRI/ DE/ RICI' on a book supported on the back of Father Time.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Morikofer, Johann Melchior","id":"A38434"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"medals"},{"name":{"text":"Jakob Langenbucher","id":"AUTH343572"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"Silver box"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"striking (metal-working)","id":"AAT206846"},{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"engraving (printing process)","id":"AAT53225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Struck and engraved silver and engraved paper","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BW4225","2008BW4132","2008BV4150","2008BV4116","2008BV4115","2014HG0434","2014HG0435","2014HG0436","2014HG0437","2014HG0439"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"71","id":"THES49723"},"free":"","case":"CA002","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"medal box","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Berne","id":"x28747"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"medals"},{"place":{"text":"Augsburg","id":"x32552"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"rims, probably"},{"place":{"text":"Augsburg","id":"x32552"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"roundels"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1759-63","earliest":"1759-01-01","latest":"1763-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"0.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"5.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 02/05/24 IW ","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Inscribed 'FRIDERICUS MAGNUS REX BORUSSORUM'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On the obverse"},{"content":"Signed 'I.M.M.'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On the arm on the obverse"},{"content":"Inscribed 'VERITAS PARADOXA'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On the reverse"},{"content":"Signed 'I M Morikofer F' and dated 'MDCCLVIIII'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On the reverse"}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Asprey, London, 1991.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Box Medal with paper roundels.
