The photographs were reproduced as postcards.\n\r\nThe ballet, choreographed by Marius Petipa to music by Cesare Pugni (apparently his 312th and penultimate score for ballet), was first seen at the Bolshoi, St Petersburg, on  17 October 1868. <i>Le Roi Candaule</i> was based on Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges's retelling of the story of the titular king of Lydia and his beautiful wife, which appears in Herodotus's Histories and has a number of parallels to Shakespeare’s<i> Macbeth</i>. The ballet was also presented in Moscow and remained a popular work in the Imperial ballet repertoire. Nijinsky first appeared as a slave, dancing a pas de deux with Julia Sedova, on 27 December 1906.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Nijinsky appears as a mulatto slave with hooped earrings and feathered headdress.
