The Edict had provided religious tolerance for Huguenots (Protestants) living in Catholic France. Métayer and his family moved to Amsterdam, where he established himself as a goldsmith and became a citizen in 1730. He and his brother Philippe, a talented chaser, distinguished themselves for their works in gold, including snuffboxes of exceptional quality. \r\n\r\nThis box is chased with a scene from the Old Testament, of Rebecca at the well. Rebecca offers water to Abraham's servant and his camels. She is subsequently chosen to be the bride of Abraham's son, Isaac. The chasing may be by Louis Métayer's brother, Philippe, a leading chaser.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"A cartouche shaped gold snuffbox, the cover set with a plaque chased with a scene of Rebecca at the Well bordered by scrolls","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Métayer, Louis","id":"A22445"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"moulding","id":"AAT53134"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Chased gold","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BV3911","2008BV4016","2008BV3980"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"71","id":"THES49723"},"free":"","case":"CA015","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"snuffbox","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Amsterdam","id":"x28722"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1739","earliest":"1739-01-01","latest":"1739-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"6.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"4.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"2.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 29/01/24 IW","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Mark of Louis Métayer, script 'M' within script 'L, goldsmith registered in Amsterdam, 1730-1774","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the front wall"},{"content":"Town mark of Amsterdam until 1807","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the front wall"},{"content":"Date letter 'E' for 1739, Netherlands","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the front wall"},{"content":"Control mark, Netherlands","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Kenneth Davis, London.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"A cartouche shaped gold snuffbox, the cover set with a plaque chased with a scene of Rebecca at the Well bordered by scrolls","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Truman, Charles.<u>The Gilbert collection of gold boxes</u>, Vol. I.
