He was clearly a successful businessman, paying the same amount of tax as François-Thomas Germain, the royal goldsmith. He gave his name to a particular type of box, the <i>georgette</i>, known from contemporary references, although the exact style is no longer clear. After his death, following the custom, his widow went into business with his only apprentice, Pierre- François-Mathis de Beaulieu and subsequently married him, trading as Veuve Georges and later Veuve Georges Beaulieu. \r\n\r\nFrom the 1750s onwards, natural stone specimens provided a rich source of inspiration for new enamel effects for luxury gold snuffboxes and porcelain. During this period French goldsmiths developed a large variety of enamel colours to imitate stones, most probably inspired by the enamellers working for the newly founded Vincennes porcelain factory. The decorative impact of this snuffbox, with charming grisaille putti frolicking against a pink marbled ground, is very similar to the decoration of Sèvres porcelain vases of this date. The subjects appear to be taken from engravings after the painter François Boucher.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver,  mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes.
